George Rickey Sculpture Conservation

“The kinetic sculptures of George Rickey are mesmerizing. Found on the lawns of both museum locations, these engineering feats perform an elegant metal dance with even the slightest breeze.

The graceful movement requires a great deal of precision. If there is any weight displacement, or if any of the bearings aren’t properly lubricated, the “elegant dance” becomes more of a clumsy audition.

That was the state of the museum’s three George Rickey sculptures. One piece in particular—Broken Columns—was in desperate need of attention. “The piece was non-functioning, in bad need of cleaning, repair, and servicing,” said collections technician Eric Walden.

The museum contacted Thomas Podnar, senior conservator of sculpture, monuments and historic fountains at McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory Inc. Podnar, who has worked on art across the country for 23 years, oversaw the move of Rickey’s Two Open Rectangles Eccentric from the Federal Building to the museum’s front Beretania Street lawn in 2011.

Over the course of a week Podnar and Walden carefully dissected, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled the sculptures, “It’s great to be a part of this restoration, and to collaborate with Eric, who is so familiar with these works, how they are supposed to look,” says Podnar. “He’s seen exactly how much these works have deteriorated, and I appreciate his insight.”

Last Friday, Broken Column and Open Triangles Excentric, were reinstalled at Spalding House, and the results were so astounding it caught the experts off guard. “As soon as we finished our work and reinstallation of the piece people immediately came to us asking if there was a motor inside,” says Walden. “No one at Spalding House remembers seeing the piece work the way it does now, it’s so fluid and dynamic, it captivates the viewer. Not expecting what we saw, Tom and I stood watching the piece for at least 30 minutes, it was amazing.”
